Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Loki?
A Loki is a new kind of social website for one specific niche. Slightly related to a wiki, it is different in a number of key aspects. Everyone can comment, write articles, and make contributions without needing to register. Questions can be asked and answered very easily and visibly for the whole community - the Q & A component is perhaps the most important aspect of a Loki. All contributed questions, answers, and articles are auto-translated into many languages, stored in an optimized form easily found and indexed by search engines, and shared with aggregator sites for maximum publicity.
Why this name?
The naming comes from Norse mythology - there, Loki is a god or jötunn (or both). Loki is the son of Fárbauti and Laufey, and the brother of Helblindi and Býleistr. By the jötunn Angrboða, Loki is the father of Hel, the wolf Fenrir, and the world serpent Jörmungandr.
Also, it is a short and easy to remember name and is slightly related to wikis. Finally, the geographic location aspect of the Loki framework is yet one more reason for the naming.
Is it safe to contribute my article?
If you have contributed something, it remains under your control forever, and other people cannot just go and modify or delete it as is the case with wikis. However, all materials are rated by the community, with highest rated content rising to the top and lower rated information being displayed at the bottom.
The administration also reserves the right to disapprove content which is off-topic for this Loki or violates our Terms & Conditions.
What do I gain by participating?
Both asking and answering questions, rating content, submitting media and links, and generally all activity on the Loki earns you reputation points to make you a recognized member of the Loki community.
Well-recognized members with a history of quality contributions can become moderators, giving their opinion higher weight, obtaining a number of additional powers, and potentially also financial benefits from the Loki operation.
Loki accounts are both local and global - you can use the same Loki account to participate in all Lokis, and it gives a lot of benefits - but if you prefer to keep things private, you are absolutely free to by hiding your presence in a certain Loki. You can also participate anonymously or simply create a new account in a flash.
All Loki sites are also a social network - you can follow the activity of people you like, befriend them, find and communicate with people in your area interested in the same things as you, and lots more.
Should I join?
You don't have to! Most key Loki functionality can be used anonymously without any registration and hassle. However, to avoid spammers and bots, anonymous users have to fill out a human verification captcha when submitting content and writing comments, which can get tiring. So if you find that you write more than just a few comments, it is a good idea to register - it takes under 60 seconds and permanently frees you from the need to type captchas. Additionally, you get lots of various perks - for example, you now automatically gain reputation and unlock badges as you do anything on this Loki or any other one.
What's with the map?
One of the key Loki concepts is geographical proximity. By default, Loki users agree to share their approximate location, such as country and state - not their real address, of course - and you automatically see members who live not too far away and who you can maybe meet up with in real life and maybe even become friends.
How can I hide my location?
Easy - just select the "Hide my location" option in your profile. You will still see other Lokians (our term for Loki members) near you on the minimap, but your location won't be displayed to anyone on the map or in your profile, and people won't be able to find you in geographic search.
